Every time I lace up my skates, I remember how important my derby community is to me and just how lucky I am to have it.
See, after about four years of playing derby, I began to feel that my body wasn’t keeping up. I went in for tests and was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, mixed connective tissue disease, fibromyalgia, and osteopenia. It was a lot to take in.
But I was determined not to allow my ailments to define me, and I worked to keep myself healthy enough to play the sport I loved. It wasn’t easy, but with the support of my family and my derby community, I found myself in remission within a year of my diagnosis.
Being supported both in sport and in life, regardless of physical limitations, is one of the biggest gifts Rose City Rollers has given me. Would you make a gift today to help sustain this amazing and inclusive community?
Today, I’m a member of the High Rollers, one of Rose City Rollers’ four home teams, and I skate on the Russian national roller derby team. I’m also founder of the Roller Derby Invisible Pain Support Group, a group that brings together skaters around the world who have chronic invisible physical illnesses and/or autoimmune conditions.
Whatever health or fitness means for you, Rose City Rollers gives you the space and flexibility to be your best at any point in time. Please give through the Give!Guide today to help sustain this nonprofit, skater-run league.
I’m more in love with roller derby now than ever before, and while being active at this level can have its challenges, being a part of this community makes me stronger overall. That’s a big part of what Rose City Rollers is — women and girls helping each other take charge of their lives, on the track and off.
