About the Rose City Rollers and the Development Manager position 

Rose City Rollers (RCR) is a unique nonprofit looking for an equally unique Development Manager. Who are we? Rose City Rollers is a 17-year-old fearless sports organization, that prides itself in being body positive and an empowering space for women, girls and gender expansive individuals. We are the largest roller derby league in the world with 550+ members, ages 7-50+. Members and their families are engaged, they volunteer, and can be opinionated, but they do so because they are passionate about derby, its impact, and our community.

As the Development hire, you’ll working closely with an established Development Committee on ongoing events and initiatives, manage the organization’s fundraising budget and move towards a capital campaign. You’ll also work closely with the Executive Director on building and managing relationships with donors and funders at all levels.

In normal years, 83% of our $750,000 budget is from earned income such as derby games, skater membership fees and merchandise. As part of our strategic plan, Rose City Rollers is committed to diversifying our revenue, by growing our contribution/fundraising revenue to 20% in 2021. To help us strengthen our fundraising abilities and professionalism, along with preparing us to launch a capital campaign the moment a new facility is secured. Capital campaign experience would be nice in a candidate, but we have a relationship with a consulting firm if needed.

We completed another successful year end appeal and continue to build our donor base to include both monthly and annual donors at all levels. We’ve received a handful of grants (OCF, Multnomah Athletic Foundation, Nike Employee Fund, and the Blazers to name a few), and feel like we’ve just scratched the surface – foundations want to put their money into life changing endeavors, and roller derby is just that.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Create and implement annual development plan and strategy in conjunction with leadership and the Development Committee
  • Recruit and train a team of volunteers to support development efforts with support from the Volunteer Manager
  • Work to develop league wide culture of philanthropy
  • Be prepared to work on a capital campaign
  • Support team and program fundraising
  • Write grant proposals and report to corporate, foundation, and government funders
  • Develop and manage Board of Directors’ fundraising capacity
  • Sponsorship management and attain goals and budgets
  • Leverage key relationships and contacts within and outside of the league to meet development goals
  • Ensure data is entered into Little Green Light accurately in a timely manner, in conjunction with the league administrative assistant
  • Create a donor recognition strategy that is meaningful to current and future donors

 Requirements: 

  • 2-3 years of development and volunteer management experience or transferable skills
  • Experience executing development related marketing campaigns
  • Proven track record of achieving revenue targets
  • Experience working with diverse employee, member, volunteer, and donor base
  • High energy, positive, “can-do” attitude; high degree of initiative; strategic thinking and an ability to deal with ambiguity
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
  • Proficient computer skills and knowledge of database programs (Microsoft Office, Little Green Light, MS Teams)
  • Able and willing to work from home on personal equipment (computer, phone, etc.)
  • Reliable transportation to our venue and other off-site locations as needed

Work Schedule: This role is designed to be 40 hrs/wk full time, exempt. Work often happens on weekends and evenings. Outside of activities and meetings, work is done from a home office, typically M-F, 9-5.

Compensation: $42,000-$50,000 salary based on experience, reviewed annually.
