Rose City Rollers is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that is truly for the community, by the community. In 2025, volunteers contributed over 22,000 hours of their time. Every game, tournament, Skatemobile event, and community program is made possible by the incredible people who volunteer their time, talents, and passion. 

Each year, we host 90+ games, 2+ tournaments, and 50+ Skatemobile and Outreach events, and every one of them depends on volunteers. Whether you’re looking to meet new people, support someone you love, gain new skills, give back to your community, or simply be part of the excitement, there’s a place for you here. No skating experience is required; we have opportunities for every interest, schedule, and skill level. 

Our volunteers are the heart of Rose City Rollers, and we’re grateful for every person who helps make this league such a welcoming and vibrant community. 

Ways to Get Involved 

Game Day Crew 

Our game days take a village! Volunteers help create an exciting, welcoming experience for skaters, fans, and visiting teams. Opportunities include: 

• Ushers 
• Front Entrance 
• Merchandise 
• Set Up & Tear Down 
• Raffle 
• Bartending 
• And more! 

Whether you’re welcoming fans through the doors or helping transform the venue before and after games, every role helps make game day a success.  

Specialized Game Day Roles 

Looking for a way to build a unique skill set or get even more involved? We also have volunteer positions that require specialized skills or credentials. These roles are a great way to become an even bigger part of the Rose City Rollers community. 

• Announcers: Keep the crowd informed, engaged, and excited while helping tell the story of the game. We provide inhouse training, you just need to bring the enthusiasm. 
• Volunteer Medics: Help support the safety of our athletes and officials during games and tournaments. Medical credentials are required for this role (EMTs, Paramedics, Athletic Trainers, LPN, RN, NP, MD with sports medicine or emergency medical experience). 
• Photographers: Capture the action and memorable moments that showcase our athletes and community. 
• Live Streaming Team: Operate cameras, graphics, replay, and production software (OBS) to broadcast games to fans around the world. 

Many of our specialized volunteers started with a single game day shift and discovered a passion they never expected! 

Officials 

Did you know it takes 16 Officials to fully staff a Roller Derby game? Want to be right in the middle of the action? Our Officials team includes both Skating Officials (referees) and Non-Skating Officials (scorekeepers, penalty timers, jam timers, and more). No experience is necessary; we provide training and mentorship to help you learn the game and build your skills. 

Committees  

Our committees are what drive the league forward towards our goals and embodies the “for the community, by the community” part of RCR. Our committees include:  

• JDEI: Our Justice, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee drives our work towards being an anti-racist organization through hosting learning spaces, creating affinity spaces for members, and providing guidance on policy making. • Merch Committee: This committee helps the Merch Manager plan, design, order, and maintain the inventory for all of our merch. If you are interested, join the #comm-merch Slack channel.  
• Rent N Roll: Our Rent n Roll program always needs some love and leadership! Involvement includes gear maintenance, quarterly inventory, and more. To become involved or get more information, see the #comm-rnr Slack channel.

Skatemobile and Outreach Events 

Love introducing people to roller skating? Join our Skatemobile outreach team! Volunteers help at community festivals, parks, youth programs, and special events, bringing the joy of roller skating to thousands of people across the Portland metro area each year. 

Behind-the-Scenes Projects 

Not all volunteering happens at the Hangar. We also have flexible opportunities that can be completed from home, affectionately known as “no pants gigs.” Whether it’s graphic design, writing, administrative support, or other special projects, you can make a meaningful impact on your own schedule.

Volunteering is rewarding in more ways than one! As a thank-you for helping keep Rose City Rollers rolling, volunteers enjoy a few extra perks along the way. 

• Free admission on the day you volunteer. Most of our events are doubleheaders, so if you volunteer for one game, you can stay and enjoy the other game for free. 
• Earn rewards while you volunteer. Every volunteer hour you log is tracked through our volunteer portal and can be redeemed for great league perks, including game tickets, Rose City Rollers merchandise vouchers, stream passes, and Float On float sessions. 

Whether you’re volunteering for your first shift or your fiftieth, we appreciate every hour you share with our community!
