The Rose City Wreckers (Recreation Program)

The Rose City Rollers are proud to announce the addition of the Rose City Wreckers, a recreation program designed to further the competitive sport of flat track roller derby. The program is open to all women aged 18 and up interested in playing derby at any competitive level. Wreckers are afforded the same benefits as all other league members- including regular skating time, participation in events, and opportunities to pitch in- without the level of commitment and time demanded by bouting league teams.

Who You'll See at Practices:

  • novice skaters testing the waters
  • women planning on trying out for the fresh meat training program
  • retired derby skaters
  • transfers from other teams (a great way for these women to continue practicing until the next tryouts)

The Beauty of Wreckers is that all levels of skaters are welcome to join and no one is ever forced to participate in a drill they do not feel comfortable in.  If a skater is uncomfortable with a certain drill she is welcome to skate around the outside track and work on other skills or watch the drill in action.  It is not rare to see a seasoned skater taking time out of practice to help a newer skater build their skills one on one.

Who Should Join:

Women 18 and older who...

  • match any of the above descriptions
  • are interested in the competitive sport of flat track roller derby
  • are looking for a fun way to work out (seriously, way more fun than the gym and cheaper!)
  • want training from experienced coaches (seasoned RCRs and RCR referees)
  • want to hone their derby skills for the next tryouts (tryouts are generaly held every 3-4 months)

Wrecking Time:

Wreckers get the RCR practice hangar and playing floor twice every week.

Friday evening 6:00-8:00 PM and Saturday afternoon 1-3 PM.

In addition, Wreckers who show adequate safety, skill, and control may be allowed to take part in league endurance training and scrimmages.

What Practices Look Like:

Each practice is led by an experienced coach.  During practices we use many of the same drills that are used at team practices.

  • We generally start our practices by skating 30 laps around the track to warm-up
  • We then practice any of a number of drills to help us work on our: footwork, muscle strength, weaving, whipping, hitting, pack awareness and jamming
  • If we have the numbers we like to end our practice sessions with a scrimmage.  The greatest way to become comfortable with the three different positions and get to know the rules associated with roller derby is by scrimmaging!

Requirements:

• WFTDA/RCR skater insurance $50 for the year
• Safety gear: helmet, mouth guard, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards Remember, saftey is sexy!
• Quad roller skates (no rollerblades allowed)
• $25/month RCR standard league dues due after your first month skating (initial month is free)
• League volunteer involvement encouraged (a great way to get to know the RCR family)
