(Recreation Program)

The Rose City Rollers are proud to invite you to join the Rose City Wreckers, a recreation program designed to further the competitive sport of flat track roller derby. The program is open to all women aged 18 and older interested in playing derby at any level. Wreckers are afforded the same benefits as all other league members- including regular skating time, participation in events, and opportunities to pitch in- without the level of commitment and time demanded by bouting league teams.

Who You'll See at Practices

  • Novice skaters testing the derby waters
  • Women planning on trying out for the fresh meat training program
  • Retired derby skaters
  • Transfers from other teams (a great way for these women to continue practicing until the next tryouts)

The beauty of Wreckers is that all levels of skaters are welcome to join and no one is ever forced to participate in a drill they do not feel comfortable in.  If a skater is uncomfortable with a certain drill she is welcome to skate around the outside track and work on other skills or watch the drill in action.  It is common see a seasoned skater take time out of practice to help a newer skater build their skills one on one.

Who Should Join

Women 18 and older who...

  • Match any of the above descriptions
  • Are interested in the competitive sport of flat track roller derby
  • Are looking for a fun way to work out (seriously, way more fun than the gym and cheaper!)
  • Want training from experienced coaches (seasoned RCRs and RCR referees)
  • Want to hone their derby skills for the next tryouts (tryouts are generally held every 3-4 months)

Wrecking Time

So, you want to skate with Rose City Rollers as a Wrecker? Well, cool, we’d like that too! Roller Derby, even in a recreational setting, is a physically demanding sport. We’re not telling you this to scare you; we just want you to be well informed. No tryouts are required to become a Wrecker; however orientation is REQUIRED to become a Wrecker unless you are already a RCR League skater.

Orientation: Our next orientation is Saturday February 11th, 2012 from 1:00 – 3:00pm at the Hangar. Due to the nature of the intake process you must arrive by 1:15 to participate in the orientation.

Meet the Wreckers Skate Session: On Saturday February 4th, 2012 (5:00 – 6:00: arrive as early as 4:30 to gear up) we’re offering a unique opportunity to skate with the Wreckers before making a financial investment in skates and gear. The Wreckers will be partnering with the Oaks Park  Derby 101 class, where you can learn many of the basic skills needed to skate derby.
  • $8.00 you’ll get instruction from Rose City Roller skaters, safety gear and skate rental. Helmets are NOT provided but are required.
  • Learn many of the basic skills needed to skate derby
  • Meet the girls with whom you'll be skating
  • Get a fun workout and get pointers on skating derby
  • Not a requirement for coming to orientation but a highly recommended activity
  • After class visit the Oaks Park Shop to shop for gear. (10% discount!)

Before Orientation

What Gear Do I Need?

Safety is sexy!! It is important to purchase high quality knee pads, wrist guards and elbow pads - you'll be using them a lot!! New skates and gear typically runs $200 - $300.

  • Properly fitted helmet
  • Knee pads
  • Wrist guards
  • Elbow pads
  • Mouth guard (boil and fit at home)
  • Crash pads (optional, but helpful if you're very new to skating)

Where Can I Buy Derby Gear?

During Orientation
  • Wear comfortable workout clothes and sneakers and be prepared to participate in a general conditioning workout with other members of the Wreckers program
  • Bring skate gear if you want a gear inspection - no skating during orientation
  • Paperwork and checks are submitted for processing
  • Learn about the Rose City Rollers and the Wreckers program
  • Learn how to become more involved and get hooked up with a mentor

WFTDA Insurance
  • All skaters are strongly encouraged to have primary insurance coverage prior to skating and must have WFTDA to skate with the league
  • Per accident maximum: $10,000
  • Deductible: $5,000 (without primary insurance) or $1,000 (with primary insurance)
  • General liability for skater and venue: $5 Million
  • Injuries sustained during practice must be reported to Wreckers admin and Insurance
  • Accident reports must be filed within 14 days

After Orientation
  • Wait to receive your authorization to skate email before joining practice
  • Get enrolled on the RCR Forum
  • Sign-up to be a member of the Google group
  • Find us on Facebook and ask to join the group
  • Sign-up with the Volunteer management system
  • Let us know if your address, insurance, or personal information changes

What Should I Expect During Practice?
  • Each practice is led by an experienced coach
  • We generally start our practices by skating 30 laps around the track to warm-up
  • During practice we use many of the same drills that are used at team practices including footwork, muscle strength, weaving, whipping, hitting, pack awareness and jamming
  • If we have enough experienced skaters, we like to end practice with a scrimmage - the best way to become comfortable with the three different positions and know the rules

If you have any questions please contact the Wreckers Admin at wreckers@rosecityrollers.com. We hope to see you soon!
