Teams, leagues, etc... Who plays who?

A question from one who is simply ignorant on these matters (that would be me...).

Upon learning that roller derby had become my New Favorite Thing, my dear sainted mother asked me if I knew that there was a derby presence in my old hometown. She probably asked this only after having sighed heavily and wondered where she went wrong, but I digress…

Anyhow, Tri-Cities in the glorious state of Washington has the Atomic City Roller Girls.

From what I can tell, they seem to play Eastern Washington and Idaho teams and they don’t seem to get out this way.

Is this a coastal thing? Are they a different league? Perhaps they’re just a bunch of illiterate townies who aren’t up to competing with the Break Neck Betties?

Might anyone be so kind as to clue me in about how these matches get set up?

Atomic has played here before.. It was a while back, but does happen!

Our home teams play each other, except in some exhibition games like the Rat City ones, or Friday night fundraiser scrimmages.

Atomic City did play the Lava City Cinder Kittens ("B" travel team) during Derby Daze last year, before the infamous AoA/Bakersfield game.

Atomic City is not a WFTDA member league, so they can play whoever they feel like playing. They would play teams closest to them for the sake of travel expense and convenience. They'd also want to play teams within a similar skill range if possible.

Rose City is a very competitive program, so our home teams are often stronger (or much stronger) than visiting teams from around the region.

That clear it up?

Also, WOJ plays other WFTDA ranked teams (http://wftda.com/leagues) and AoA plays other takers who want a challenge.
