Oly Rollers skating under real names?

I just heard a rumor (yay Twitter) that the Oly Rollers were going to follow the Mile High Club's lead and skate under their government names next year.

Seems unlikely to me, if only because Julie Glass (Atomatrix) runs a thriving business based on her derby name ... but you never know.

I'm just praying that this soul-destroying idea doesn't seem like a good one to the WoJ.

Some make an argument that real names make the sport seem more legitimate. I don't think I agree, but I have heard that argument.

I've heard that too, Swag - and I don't buy it either.

I think roller derby is heading towards athletic legitimacy on its own terms - and that it would be a shame to mistake "legitimacy" with the imitation of every other sport.

About the only close comparison I can think of is some boxing and UFC type sports where something other than full true names are used to reference the athletes.

Mile High Club's lead and skate under their government names next year

There are many rumors I've heard surrounding the two Denver teams each trying to be the only "real" derby league in Denver, including things like not playing with each other (Denver Roller Dolls is hosting WFTDA championships alone in 2011) and asking volunteers to work only for one team or the other.

Given names versus derby names for their travel teams seems to be one more way for the two leagues to be different from each other, and I imagine if DRD and RMRG are each trying to be the lone "real" derby league in Denver that we might see some variations on what being a "real" league might look like.

And I'm not sure that having members of the "Mile High Club" use their real names makes that argument very well. ;)

After some consideration I'm dead set against this! I've already tagged some 17000 pictures with derby names in the exif
data this year.
