Fun Things to do for a visiting skater (post worked!)

Unread postby Anne Frankenstein » Mon Jan 16, 2012 1:59 pm

Hi!

I'm a visiting skater from NYC whose super excited to see Portland. I won't be in town until late February but I'm kind of a planner. My partner and I are compiling a list of "things to do" while there. Any suggestions of must-see/must-do activities would be super appreciated.

About us - We both dig music - shoegaze, future/electro-pop, new/dark wave, industrial, and basically anything good. We love to dance and we're into art and film. She and I both love nature and would like to see some of that - I'm sure it's quite different than here in New York. We're into sushi and other yummy foods. Thrifting and antiquing are definitely at the top of my hobby list.

We'll be hanging out for about a week. We both hope to get the opportunity to skate at some practices. I've been told I need to speak with team captains for the team practices which I'd be happy to do. It's going to be fun.

Grateful for any advice. Thank you!!

Sushi - go to Yoko's on SE Gladstone
Thriftstores - hit up SE Hawthore from 13th up to 35th
Go to the Gorge and Visit Multnomah falls then go hike Horsetail Falls
You should also hit up Bonnie and OMG for their fave Portland spots

The Lovecraft - its a bar that might play what you like.

If you have some flexibility on when you will be here - shoot for the last thursday of the month.

My opinion only, best sushi is not in the city - it is in Hillsboro - Syun.

We also have one of the few Sake Breweries in the US here in forest grove OR - Sake One.

Voodoo Donut is on everyone's list. It's fun for a single sugar rush.

Take a look at Cinema 21 for interesting movies that are not mainstream. Mid month there is an internation film festival

Thank you! I was going to check out Lovecraft Bar. Would love to travel outside the city too... but won't have a car. Thanks for the cinema suggestion - I'll check that out! What is Voodoo Donut??

Powell's City of Books at 10th & Burnside NW is a must, though sometimes out-of-towners end up with the problem of how to get all those books they bought home.

I would go enjoy the different neighborhoods and their establishments (no shortage of great bars and restaurants here), if I were you. Alberta St., Mississippi Ave, SE Hawthorne, SE Clinton. NW 23rd is not bad for a visit. Other people can stick up for their favorite neighborhoods.

I really like Zilla Sake House on Alberta St. for their sake and sushi. My two bits on the sushi issue.

There are lots of great music venues. Check http://portlandmercury.com for listings. That's a good resource in general.

You can get pretty much anywhere by bus:

http://www.trimet.org has a good transit trip planner.

Or friend up some of the RCR skaters. They're always going fun places and doing swell stuff.

I hope you have a good time.

Oh, one other thing you might do, which is sometimes fun, is go on up to the 30th floor of the US Bank Tower (SW fifth & Burnside) and have a beverage at the Portland City Grill. If it's a clear day, the view will be spectacular.

p.s. - Absolutely agree with Mean that you should get somebody to take you out to the Columbia Gorge for a hike or two.

Also, there's a ton of antiquing to be done in the Sellwood neighborhood, which is not far from Oaks Park, where most of the skating action happens. While you're in Sellwood, you can stop into Kay's bar for a beverage and some poutine.

This is great. Thanks swag - and everyone else! Our list is coming along very nicely. It doesn't look like we'll be lacking for things to do.

If it's a clear day, you should head over the South Waterfront and take the tram up the hill. It's cool to be able to see Mt Hood and Mt St. Helens!

Tons of great suggestions already...if you want to head out to the Gorge for a hike, I might be up for it if my schedule allows. Hit me up when it gets closer. :) My info is in my signature.

Sounds fantastic! I was told that there may be cheap cabins to stay in too. Can anyone point me in the direction of one wanting to spend a night in the woods? Thank you!

I don't know if there are any cabins to stay at in the gorge. Maybe if you go out to Hood River or on the WA side of the Columbia, but that is farther away than most of the falls. If you want a weekend in the woods, Mt. Hood has lots of cabins, but it will still be snowy up there. Don't know if that is what you are looking for. Otherwise, I'm sure there are cabins somewhere else, but I'm not the one to ask.

If Holocene is a bust on Friday night, go to The Fez for SHUT UP & DANCE! It's on W Burnside and 11th Avenue in downtown Portland, $5.00 cover, Fridays only. DJ Gregarious plays a lot of new wave, 80's pop, brit pop, and some old-school goth stuff mixed in. :blackeye: Then you can walk a few blocks to SIZZLE PIE for some of the best late-night pizza in town!
