I just moved to Portland, and I really want to join Wreckers! Can I just show up to check out practice? Are there skates and gear available to use until I get my own? Is it okay if I haven't skated in years? So many questions! Thanks!

Hi imaskier,

Most of the details about the Wreckers program are here: http://www.rosecityrollers.com/teams/wreckers/

There is also a weekly Beginning Roller Derby class at Oaks Park Skating Rink Saturdays at 5:00 p.m. For this class, you can rent your skates and they have gear to borrow.

To practice at Wreckers you will need gear: wrist, elbow, and knee pads; skates; helmet. Gear can be purchased at Oaks Skate Shop. You will also need $70 for league WFTDA insurance and sign a waiver for your first practice. It's okay if you haven't skated in many years, Wreckers is open to skaters of all levels.

If you have more questions feel free to e-mail me!

The class at Oask Park has been FABULOUS! I've gone to at least 3 and will continue to go. I plan on going to Wreckers as soon as my work schedule changes.

I highly suggest wearing a helmet to the practices on Sunday. Though it's a begining class and there is no hits, there are a lot of new skaters or perhaps skaters who haven't done it in years. Before I learned how to fall right (forward on to lovely pads) I wore my helmet. Then I thought it was fine not to but saw a skater last week hit the ground hard with her head. No helmet. So from now on I will be wearing mine. You never know when you may go backwards.

If you're like me and still getting use to all the moves I suggest the helmet. Protection is sexy!

I'm eager for the next boot camp (missed getting into this one) and can't wait to go to Wreckers!!!

I actually started a post on this forum about seeing if other people in our similar situation would like to get together and practice during the weekdays later in the evening. I still need to check with Oaks and Skateworld as to their policy on speed skating, falling, and hitting.

RCR works hard to maintain a relationship with Oaks for the league to use their facilities...rink time is negotiated and precious with many different clubs/teams looking for rink time (jam skate, speed skate, RCR, artistic skate, etc.)

I am assuming that speed skating, falling practice, and hitting would not be suitable for an open skate and pose a danger to families and non-derby skaters there.

Wreckers may have an alternate practice slot in the future and this is currently in discussion.

We look forward to seeing you both at Wreckers when your work schedule allows.

Hi, thanks for posting!

To answer your question, WFTDA insurance is $50 for coverage in 2011, regardless of which month the person joins RCR.

Hey, I plan on trying to join the Wreckers next time orientation/tryouts start out. According to the calendar there are practices on Mondays at like 10AM. I go to college-- is it cool if I miss those Mondays as long as I attend the other practices?

Wreckers do not have any practice requirements. You can attend as many or as few practices as you want to as long as you've attended the orientation. :D

Hello. :) Does it matter whether I fill out the Wreckers entry form now, even if orientation isn't until Nov? Or does it not matter? :albino:

Hi Ladies,
I'm planning on coming to the Wreckers orientation this Saturday, but had a question about equipment. I know we won't be skating at the orientation, but was wondering what type/hardness of wheel you prefer. My skates came with some really hard wheels and I'd like to purchase some that are a bit softer, but I need a recommendation.
Thanks for your help!

So, say someone from a neighboring league (namely me, lol) has some free time on Saturdays and might be interested in skating with the Wreckers. Is that kosher? If so, I would assume that they would still have to go to an orientation and then pay wrecker dues. Yes?

What league? Do you have WFTDA insurance? You'll want to contact Uff-da at calendar@rosecityrollers.com she will be able to tell you if you can just be a visitor or if you'd need to go through orientation. We'd love to have you just have to make sure paper work and such is good.

Hi,

I'm new to Portland and to skating...well I have not skated in quite some time. I am interested in joining the wreckers, but I have just one concern. I work on saturdays from 7-4pm and I will not be able to make the orientation on May 19th. Is there anyway I can still join? I've read the handbooks, understand all the other requirements. I would LOVE to join and it would be disappointing (yet understandable) if I can't join because of that. Please let me know if there is anything I can do. I'd appreciate it :)

hey TF@2012,

I don't have your email so can't contact you in that way. I don't get the Wreckers admin emails so I personally have not seen it. With the way Wreckers is currently set up you would have to come to the orrientation but that would be the only saturday that is required. The reason for this is thats the only time we can do all of the insurance paper work that needs to happen for our skaters to be allowed to skate. Feel free to email me personally if you like.

Sorry for the late response I'm not able to check the forum at work and have been off line recently due to illness.

I need an admin to watch me skate so I can be at green level for scrimmage. I am a transfer skater from Rainy City. Been skating since December 2012. I've done my skills test and everything so who do I need to talk to!? Much love in derby. -Nectar
