Travel Team Interview – Mick Swagger

Mick U Cry/ Mick Swagger

Interview conducted for post “WTF: ‘Travel-Team Only’ Option?

Was it your decision to go TT-only or were you approached?

I feel like it’s a natural decision for WOJ.  We’ve all been brainstorming pros and cons for a couple years, but this year seems to be the year that many seasoned players and the up and comers, like me, want to dedicate and elevate our training mentally and physically to the national level.  I also factor into my decision the opportunities it brings to RCR.  If WOJ players went TT-only, then that many roster spots open up on the home teams.  There are so many Fresh Meat just training their asses off, who really deserve to make a team, and there just hasn’t been room.  I felt like I was occupying a spot on the roster that should go to a new, fresh face, ready to dedicate her heart to the Heathers.  Not that I wasn’t dedicated… the Heathers are my favorite team in the world.  They taught me how to play derby with heart and teamwork.  Being elected their captain was an honor and a super fun year.

How many seasons have you been doing both home and travel teams?

I’ve been on the Heathers and WOJ for two seasons.  I was fortunate enough to get drafted onto Wheels a few months after getting drafted onto the Heathers.  The level of elevated play has been phenomenal and taught me so much.

How much more ‘free time’ will you actually have?

I don’t think I’ll have more free time, but a more focused dedication for training, fundraising, and organizing for WOJ.

What are some things you’re looking forward to now that you’re TT-only?

I am looking forward to bench coaching the Heathers!  I’ve always wanted to move into training and coaching for a team, but I’ve been so new.  I think I’m ready for that next step.  I hope I can help our new Heathers learn strategy and relay all the amazing training that was given to me.  As far as WOJ goes, I’m looking forward to a more focused team and to dominate this year.  As long as I’ve watched and played on WOJ I see us constantly getting better, training smarter, and playing more strategically.  I love this team and can’t wait to have another crack at Nationals.

Some things you’ll miss about being on a home team?

I’ll miss getting my ass handed to me by Sol Train every practice…granted she doesn’t try out for WOJ.  I’ll miss DDay’s giggling when I hit her in drills.  I’ll miss champagne relays!  I’ll be sad to miss the progressive development of our new girls… I LOVE it when we teach them something and it just clicks.  They will slay the competition this year.

How will this affect you personally?

I have made a commitment to myself to elevate my level of play and focus on training.  I suppose striving to reach that level will affect my life quite a bit.  I’m super excited!

Any other comments?

I changed my name to Mick Swagger and am thinking about changing the number too, if the refs don’t stop calling me to the box (jk)!
