Weekend Recap: Closing Scramble, etc.

A couple orders of business to start with…

1. Jellypig, I was the girl in the red sweatshirt who waved at you from a bike yesterday morning.  We might be neighbors?

2. There’s been a lot of confusion about how the closing scrambles affected the season rankings.  Basically, they count the same as the opening scrambles.  Details later.

We’ve got a lot to get to, so let’s keep it snappy!

Break Neck Betties 75,  GNR 27

It took GNR almost 15 minutes to get on the board, and the Betties skated away with a victory.  GNR never made it easy though, even without new addition Squid Vicious.

GNR really gave the hangar crowd something to cheer about on Saturday with a strong showing against the High Rollers.  Which just goes to show you that you never know what’s going to happen…

Heartless Heathers 75, High Rollers 54

After a few minutes of watching bodies fly across the floor and a revolving penalty box door, I had to shake my head and refocus.  This wasn’t the game that we were expecting.

The Heathers held the lead after five minutes.  And though the High Rollers would take that lead, the Heathers outscored the High Rollers 34-11 in the last ten (hard-hitting, intense) minutes.  In the end, the Heathers handed the High Rollers their first loss of the season.

Also, chaps.  I was not expecting chaps.

Congratulations, you heartless vixens.  (Photo by Skippy Steve.)

Open Scrimmage

I wasn’t there, but man do I love this picture of Braidy Punch taking the other team out.  The future of roller derby is here!  See below, re: Rosebuds.

Courtney Ferguson recapped all the Saturday bouts

over at the Portland Mercury blog, relieving me of the unwelcome task of recapping a Betties loss, and giving me a few extra minutes for my lunch break that I may or may not spend shopping.  Thanks, Portland Mercury!  We salute you and your saucy pictures of Honey.

Rosebuds ‎167, I-5 All-Stars 131

On Sunday, I was able to peek through the open hangar doors to see a few minutes of the Rosebuds vs. the I-5 All Stars.  Lex Celerator was as tough as ever for I-5 All-Stars, both blocking and jamming.  She even pulled a smooth Mel Mangles-esque 180-degree slide around a blocker on the outside of the track.  The Rosebuds, from what I hear (as I was doing push ups and jumps with Get Fit during the end of the game), were too strong on defense for the All-Stars.

The Buds also left a gigantic cake at the hangar, which Push, Dee Dee and I found after an outdoor skate.  Best outdoor skate ever!

Season Standings

I’ll let our head stats nerd and non-skating official take this one:

Determining Intra-League Rank
Rank is determined by (in order of influence)
  1. Win-Loss record (win percentage)
  2. Head-to-head performance
  3. Average Point Differential (APD)

In the case of non-standard bout format, such as the Rose City Rollers Opening Tournament and the Closing Scramble, wins and losses count as half games.

The 2011 RCR Championship bout will be played by the teams ranked 1st and 2nd after the Closing Scramble.

Therefore, the Rose City Rollers Season 6 Championships will be played between the High Rollers (Win/Loss record of 4.5-0.5) and the Breakneck Betties (3-2).  The Heartless Heathers (2.5-2.5) and Guns N Rollers (0-5) will open the Championship event with a battle for third place.

Here is more complex explanations to satisfy questions I have been receiving post Closing Scramble.

-  Season rankings were changed entering 2011 to 1) W-L%  2) H-H performance  3) Average Point Differential in response to skater and committee requests post 2010 season.  Previously the rankings were determined via 1) W-L record  2) APD  3) H-H.

-  There was no semi-finals for the 2011 RCR season.  The Closing Scramble does not directly determine who will play for the Season 6 RCR Championships (other than the Closing Scramble’s impact on season rankings).

-  The Opening Tournament and the Closing Scramble bouts each counted as 1/2 game since they were only 1 period long.

Rainman
Head NSO
Rose City Rollers
Thank you for the “brief statement!”  (I kid.  Most of the work that goes into that job is thankless, and we really appreciate what you and the other NSOs do.)
Next up:
  • 2011 Season Championships are back at the Expo Center.  Yep, with the lights and the whole shebang.  Then…
  • The Wheels of Justice head to Philly for ECDX.  Rose City vs. Gotham, people.
