Wheels of Justice 105, Texecutioners 79
Firstly, footage for this bout is totes online.
Flashback to November 2010: in a game that broke brackets across the nation, the Texas Rollergirls defeated B.A.D. in the first round of the WFTDA championships, 72-59.
But a lot happens in roller derby in six months, not to mention the two and a half years since these teams last met. A win by Rose City over Texas on Friday was almost expected. Or at least I expected it…along with the usual ranking websites. Texas doesn’t go down easy, though, and the score was tied at halftime.
The Texecutioners were able to adjust quickly to the different defensive looks that Wheels were throwing up, and the score went back and forth until about the nineteen minute mark in the second period. Both teams started with nearly stationary defensive walls, with Rose City in the front, (Go ahead: cue it up on the video) and stood there for about 45 seconds before the Texas jammer went for it. White Flight took advantage of the chaos, and put up three scoring passes in just over one minute to put Wheels back on top. They’d stay there for the rest of the bout.
Texas wouldn’t score again for fifteen minutes. By then, it was too late.
This killer lock-down defense in the second half is something I could really get used to, Wheels.
Heartless Heathers 160, Guns ‘N’ Rollers 77
Sometimes we need to remind our families we still exist; I chose to attend my niece and nephew’s dance recital over this bout.
In my stead, we have this game report via the intrepid field reporter Soulfearic Acid:
It was never a question of whether the Heartless Heathers would beat the Guns N Rollers. The real question was, “Will this be a blow out?” GNR made some notable improvements in defense – mainly relying on a defensive front 4-wall. This complete focus on the Heather’s jammer did prevent the type of point spreads we’ve seen earlier in the season, but the lack of offense also left GNR jammers consistently on their own.
TeqKillya and Blast Unicorn’s consistent point-scoring (with the help from Baccha Nailya) sealed the deal on the Heathers’ victory by the end of the first half.
In the second period, Scald Eagle earned lead jammer in three jams and GNR fans rallied at this last attempt to close the gap, but the bout ended with White Flight scoring 10 points to leave a final score of 160-77 Heathers. Was it a blow out? Not completely.
