WWS was kind of like this crazy dream - I remember I played and watched derby for more than two days, but the details are kind of fuzzy. When I came back to reality, I was very tired and hungry and smelled terrible, but was re-energized with a kickass reminder of why we love derby so much.
The important stuff: WOJ beat Philly by 54 and Rat by 77. Wheels will play at Denver in May, so we get a chance to get them back. In short, WOJ did a fantastic job, and a fan, I couldn’t be prouder.
WWS had three tracks. Two in the main hall held WFTDA sanctioned bouts. A track in a separate hall held “Challenge” bouts. Challenge bouts included junior derby pickup, men’s derby, co-ed bouts, black and white scrimmages, home teams, b-teams, fun teams – you name it.
Right after I posted my bloglet on Saturday morning, Push got a text that a team had dropped out of a challenge bout, and skaters were needed to play pickup. We hustled out of the hotel and got ready to play some derbs. Our team turned out to be about 5 Break Neck Betties, a bunch of Rat City girls, a couple of skaters from Denver, and…Rice Rocket. Guess who didn’t know it was Rice Rocket until afterward? I hereby revoke my self-given “derby nerd” status until further notice.
So I played pickup a couple of times, guest skated with AoA (thanks ladies!) and did the black and white scrimmages. With boys. Which was different, but surprisingly fine. Watch out PMRD, I’m totally coming your way soon.
AoA beat the Jet City B-team, the B-52s, by a lot of points on Saturday afternoon. Sunday morning brought a more difficult challenge in the friendly and fierce form of Sharkasaurus, possibly my favorite challenge team concept ever. They mostly didn’t have names on their jerseys, and as previously indicated I’m not the best at recognizing skaters, but this incarnation of Sharkasaurus seemed to be mostly Rat City B-team skaters plus Re-AnimateHer, Carmen Getsome, Rice Rocket, B-Train, and who else? I told you, it’s all a blur. However, the Axles of Annihilation play against the number five team in the wooooorld every week, and they’re not scared of any skater, shark or dino. AoA came away with the win.
Did I mention that the Wheels of Justice have the best fans? Yes, I did. Because it’s true. Sadly, no pegacorns were able to make the trip, but in their stead, an Injustice League was formed. This brave group of purple-caped WOJ supporters showed their support through choreographed cape-waving, forming imposing tableux of strength, and intimidating any of those who might stand against Justice.
A fellow from Rat City may have been pantsed.
Dear Rat City guy: I’ve been assured by the responsible party that she was very careful to keep things PG-13. We Care.
All in all, I got to play and watch some amazing derby.
Thank you Slaughter County for a wonderful weekend. See you next year.

WoJ has been bouting for a month and is already 4-1 for the season (if you count the Rat City scrimmage). Badass!
Not sure where she’s from, but one of the Sharkasauruses was Meg Ladon, <3 that name so hard!
My Dear Ms. Sour –
Thanks for the recap and capturing the flavor of the event. It was hard to appreciate all the fun from back in Portland, but the live stream was great and the victories were especially swell. My chanting WOJ! WOJ! in the live stream comments were a poor excuse for not being in the crowd, but we do what we can do.
Please, call me Frisky. I hope you heard us chanting, too!
Woj beat rat by 88 pnts! There was a mistake in the score that got corrected after the game .
I see 165-78 on DNN now, which would be 87 points. Does that sound like the correct final?
