Ask Frisky: Open Scrimmages

There is a whole lot of roller derby going on this weekend in Portland, Oregon.

FRIDAY?  Boom. The Break Neck Betties have a public scrimmage with the Femme Fiana from Tacoma’s Dockyard Derby Dames.  $7 at the door, doors at 7pm.

SATURDAY?  Yes.  The High Rollers are taking on the Guns ‘n’ Rollers.  (Way sold out.)**

SUNDAY?  OMG, Rosebuds double-header!

In case this isn’t enough for you, there’s even more derby action at 10am Saturday morning in the form of a few hours of “black and white” pickup scrimmages.  Let’s learn more about these scrimmages, shall we?

Black and white?  What’s that all about?

Skaters bring a black shirt and a white shirt, then divide into teams when they get there.

Who plays?

Anyone who shows up with gear, the proper insurance and $5 at the door.

Anyone?

Well, sure.   We get a lot of skaters from Cherry City and Sick Town, usually.  Dudes are even allowed to play in co-ed action from 12-1pm.

Why just 12-1pm, you sexist jerks?

The ladies have to have USARS insurance to play with men, and that leaves out a lot of skaters.   Most of us just have WFTDA insurance.  Also, there are lots more women than men who play roller derby, so we’re going with the demand.  Things could change as time goes on.

Can I watch?

Sure thing!  Spectators are welcome, but they pay $5 as well.  All of these Lincolns go to the RCR Training Committee to pay for equipment.

Where can I learn more about this wonderous event?

We have a Facebook invite.  Spread it around.

See you there!

**If you had a season ticket, you wouldn’t have to worry about these things selling out all the time.
