Making Friends: River City Rollergirls (another RCR)

Check out what just hit the RCR Contact Us form-

Dear Rose City Rollers,

It has come to our attention, per a post on your blog by Speed Bump on April 17, 2010, that the Rose City Rollers have never heard of the River City Rollergirls:

River City Roller Girls Logo“A 409 to 22 blowout victory over River City Rollergirls – Ever heard of them? Yeah, me neither.” [click for original article]

So, we thought that we would introduce ourselves!  We are the River City Rollergirls out of Richmond, Virginia.  Our league was organized in 2006, we have been members of WFTDA since February, 2009, and had our first WFTDA bout against Dutchland in November, 2009.  We are 501 (c)(3) non profit organization run by a board of our skaters.  We just had our four-year anniversary bout, and we have three more WFTDA-sanctioned bouts this season.

Our league has two teams, both travel.  The Poe’s Punishers is our all-star team, and they play our WFTDA bouts.  The Uncivil Warriors is our training team who skates against other training teams and newer leagues.  Most of our home bouts for 2010 are double headers, so both our teams will play.  We also have multiple away bouts this year for both teams.  Our last bout, which was in April, was our first at the Greater Richmond Convention Center, a much larger venue for us.  We missed selling out our 800-person capacity by fewer than 50 tickets.  We have been really pushing to get ourselves out in Richmond.  Now we need to get ourselves out to the rest of the roller derby community.

2010 started with a few of our veterans departing, and this year has been a rebuilding year.  We have been aggressively recruiting which has resulted in some great rookies on our team.  The Punishers will be back in top form soon with our eyes on regionals and other national events.  Perhaps before too long, we will see you on the track.

So, now you know who the River City Rollergirls are.  Congratulations on your win against Charm City, by the way.  Seems like Speed Bump knew what he was talking about.  Good luck in your future bouts, and we will see you at ECE!

Yours in derby,
The River City Rollergirls

The return e-mail address was for Lenore Quicksilver, River City’s Secretary.

Thanks for writing! While I loved receiving this because it verifies people are reading this blog and she seems to think I know what I’m talking about(!), I should clear something up-

Don’t think I speak on behalf of the Rose City Rollers. RCR (of the Northwest) is comprised of 150+ people who wholeheartedly disagree with me most of the time. I’m sure some of them were probably aware of you River City skaters despite my ignorance. I don’t think I could even find Richmond on a US map (and I just Googled it).

Thanks for writing us sister RCR and you better believe I’m gonna be watching your bouts at ECE! (From a safe distance where my mouth wont get me in trouble.)
